I love your post, Sue. It reminds me of the family "lexicons" we had when the kids were young. I always used "all hands on deck" when I needed everyone asap to help out with something, and from Mission Impossible--- "your mission, should you choose to accept it" said in a humorous manner when I wanted them to do a task around the house. Also we loved the expression "family funky feeling" when there was a place or thing we didn't like. Thanx for helping me reminisce about these fun sayings from years back!
Love these intimate expressions - we have a 'Doing a Biryani on it' harking back to someone's early attempt at curry and adding too munch/many spices or "An Adamstown farewell" after a famous visit to a famil in Adamstown - who had all disappeared behind closed doors before we even had a chance to wave.
Yes yes and yes! I'll be forwarding your email to my family and asking for their contributions. The one I'll offer here is "Lord, sissy." Now this was coined by someone I went to high school with. Of course no one knows what it means as that is not the point. It is simply an interjection, and it gets people's attention. Never was too keen on the woman, but her phrase has stayed with us for 50 years.
Yes, yes we will. I bet the woman who coined it doesn't even say that phrase any longer, but it lives on in my family!
My children are silent and seemingly not on board. But my sister did offer an excellent one that is part of the wider family lexicon: MLF. This was coined by my uncle-by-marriage, who was a real card, and stands for Major Lockaby Flogging. Lockaby is my mother's maiden name, and he was married to her sister. So he knew firsthand what could happen when a Lockaby (woman in particular) decided to set someone straight. Its use, in context, would be something like, "Ooh he's going to get an MLF!"
When our son was three, now 50, he would often want to put off a boring task by saying, “I’ll do that tomorrio.” Ex. “Time to brush your teeth.” “I’ll do that tomorrio.”
My sisters & I liked to reference movies; Frankly, my dear…., And your little dog, too ……, Let’s have a cigarette on it….,
Love this! Is it bad to say one of my faves is ‘I’m one stomach flu away from my goal weight’? Well, dang, it’s just the truth. Thanks Linda for reminding me of this!
Love this Carol! It makes me think of what my brother-in-law Richie says about the kids when they have a revelatory moment: ‘The machine has become aware’ - referencing Skynet in the Terminator!
I love this and I love your phrases 🤣
At your service, Rebecca! No pansies here! 😉

So good Anne! Doing a Biryani is definitely a keeper!

We’ll take contributions from people we don’t like, won’t we Sheryl??! We are equal opportunity. Hope your fam comes up with some doozies!
